»Everywhere led cavities and clefts me downward, entrances to a system of grottos, which undermined the shelf of the reef from the breaking-off. I discovered grottos, leading more than fifty meters under the reef-massif, winding corridores and passages and cross vaults, which I followed. Every abyss l ured me to a next one opening under me, still more deeply, still more terribly.«
